Banish Those Spider Veins Before Summer

Banish Those Spider Veins Before Summer

A mild form of varicose veins called telangiectasia, spider veins take the name from their resemblance to fine red spider webs, lurking just under the surface of the skin. For most people, spider veins have little effect beyond the way they look. However, this cosmetic issue can be quite substantial, since the deep red color can make your skin seem blotchy and mottled, making you look older than necessary.

In rare cases, spider veins can be symptoms of a more serious condition and may sometimes cause discomfort or pain, but usually it’s the appearance that bothers most people. The good news is that spider veins are easy to treat in most cases. There are several treatment options, and I’ve chosen the Cynosure® TempSure™ Envi system for the patients of Cleveland Family Health.

The causes of spider veins

There doesn’t seem to be a singular cause for spider veins, so you may not be able to do much to prevent them. Some people are genetically susceptible, and they may occur as you age or during a pregnancy. Most often visible in the legs and face, people who work on their feet or outdoors exposed to the elements may see spider veins develop.

Conditions such as scleroderma and rosacea may be accompanied by spider veins, and heavy alcohol consumption can cause blood flow issues that contribute to spider veins. The appearance of existing spider veins may be aggravated by some skin care products, such as abrasive soaps, loofahs, and sponges.

Removing spider veins

There are several ways to treat spider veins, including sclerotherapy, which involves injecting chemicals into the body to block and kill these blood vessels, and laser treatment that heats the spider veins, which are then removed by the body.

The TempSure Envi system uses radiofrequency energy to deal with these stubborn spider veins. Using radio waves permits me to treat the blood vessels under the surface of the skin without damaging the outer layers. The radio energy is tuned to spider veins, which absorb this energy and warm slightly, about 10 degrees Celsius above your normal body temperature.

Once the vein walls reach this point, the body’s tissue regeneration process is triggered. Signals go out to rebuild blood vessels in the area, while simultaneously breaking down the existing spider veins and removing these through your lymphatic and circulatory systems. It’s a gentle and painless process.

Because of the tight monitoring of temperature provided by the TempSure Envi system, your skin never warms to the same level as the spider veins. If you have any response to treatment at all, it will be a temporary redness of the skin, like mild sun exposure, but without any harmful ultraviolet light. This redness will fade within a day.

You’re weeks away from the beach

Though results vary, depending on your skin type and the severity of your spider veins, most people see noticeable improvement after a few weeks, as your body’s regenerative systems take action. Some patients will see further improvement with follow-up treatment, so book now to have the results you want in time for your summer swimsuit.
